As the 2025 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Slovakia looms ever closer, the current holders, England, will be looking to emulate the glory of the past. Having won the tournament last time around in 2023, they’ll be eager to match the feat of former England U21 sides by winning the competition for a consecutive year, having previously done so in 1982 and 1984.
At the front of England’s quest for glory is 22-year-old Manchester City midfielder James McAtee. After captaining the side through a successful qualification process, finishing top of their group with 8 wins and 25 points, the midfielder has been confirmed by Lee Carsley as captain for the tournament.
Having made his U21 international debut in June 2022, the then 19-year-old has since come on leaps and bounds, hardened by a two-year loan spell with Sheffield United and emboldened by a breakout season with City this year.
For many captaincy can feel like a burden, but McAtee is relishing the opportunity to lead a determined England side to glory. Despite his relaxed and calm exterior, when speaking to him it is clear this is a man on a mission, hungry for success.
This midfielder is no stranger to seizing the moment, and his experience at Manchester City will surely be a feather in his cap as he leads his team onto the biggest stage. Bolstered by his time surrounded by serial winners, he’s shown his ability on numerous occasions. From bagging a hat-trick in the FA Cup to scoring in the Champions League, James is made for the big occasions.
Decked out in Represent’s latest collection, we sat down with the England U21 captain to discuss all things football, fashion, and music.
Proudest moment of your career so far?
James McAtee: “My hat-trick at the Etihad against Salford in the FA Cup. Scoring my first goal there, in a tournament like the FA Cup, was a dream come true. And Salford’s where I’m from, so it was a really special moment.”
England are the current U21 Euro holders – as skipper, do you feel your experience with City helps you lead the side?
James McAtee: “Being around so many winners at City – natural leaders – has definitely helped. I hope I can bring that into the England set-up, especially in tough moments. Picking the lads up when things aren’t going our way. I want to show the qualities I’ve picked up.”
Most memorable moment with the England U21s?
James McAtee: “Scoring twice against Ukraine. A massive moment in my career. I’d had a tough week – I lost one of my best mates. That lit a fire in me to go out and play for him. It was special.”
How valuable was your loan with Sheffield United, and how did it help you become a regular figure this season with City?
James McAtee: “My first loan was really my introduction to men’s football… and it was in the Championship, which is a tough league. It was a really enjoyable experience and getting out of my comfort zone was important for my development. The second loan matured me a lot.”
Talk us through your first goal for Manchester City – how did it feel?
James McAtee: “My first goal was in the Champions League – it was special! I’d played a few games already and I was desperate to get off the mark. You put so much pressure on yourself to get that first goal. When it came, it felt like a massive weight off my shoulders. I want to add goals to my game and getting the first was huge for me.”
How valuable has your time with KDB been, and how important has he been in your career?
James McAtee: “I appreciate him a lot. When I was younger in the academy, I looked up to him – he was the best player. And when I made it into the first team, he was still the best. It’s been an honour to train and play with him. Watching how he prepares, how he trains, how he performs – it’s helped me shape my game. His professionalism is top-class. He’s always been great with the younger lads – always open with his time and energy when you approach him for advice.”
How does it feel hearing the City fans chant your name at the stadium?
James McAtee: “Against Leicester, the team was struggling a bit, and I had the chance to come on. I did alright, and hearing the crowd chant my name – it gave me a real lift. Seeing it back on my phone later… it always feels good.”
Describe your fashion style in three words.
James McAtee: “Comfortable, clean, and mostly quiet luxury.”
Favourite artist?
James McAtee: “All-time? Drake. But right now, I’m into country – Sam Barber.”
Top 5 artists from your 2024 Spotify Wrapped?
James McAtee: “Drake, Kendrick, Meekz, Aitch, and Sam Barber”
Most stylish team-mate at City?
James McAtee: “Either Rúben Dias or Jack Grealish. Rúben’s always sharp and likes to experiment. Jack’s just always got it on point.”
Would you like to see arrival fits for international duty, like the French team?
James McAtee: “Definitely. It gives players a chance to express themselves, show their personality and interests. Look at the NBA – they’ve nailed it. I get that some players prefer to just focus on the game, and that’s fine. But giving the option – either club/country tracksuits or personal styling – would be great.”
